兩年前，巨人也是從外卡戰打起，Bumgarner在外卡戰中完封9局，帶領巨人隊8比0擊敗海盜隊，一路挺進世界大賽贏得冠軍，今年Bumgarner又在外卡戰先發，力拚大都會「雷神」Noah Syndergaard，Bumgarner完封9局只被打出4支安打沒失分，三振6次、保送3次，完封壓制大都會的攻勢，巨人隊能勝出，Bumgarner絕對是最大功臣。

大都會隊雷神此戰也投的相當精采，先發7局只被打出2支安打沒失分，三振10次、保送3次，表現滿分，8局Addison Reed上場中繼1局也沒失分，但9局上「守護神」Jeurys Familia上陣，卻被Conor Gillaspie轟出3分彈，一棒定江山，巨人隊晉級首輪季後賽，大都會淘汰。

Ramirez應該只是想幫隊友討回公道，不過自己卻被趕出場，馬林魚隊9局下推出日籍野手鈴木一朗代打，他敲出高飛犧牲打建功，讓馬林魚終場以7:5獲勝。

國聯分區系列賽最後一場比賽，落後上半場的道奇，在7局上終於像睡醒的獅子一樣展開反撲，先是靠著Joc Pederson的陽春彈轟回追平分，再靠著老將捕手Carlos Ruiz以及Justin Turner的適時安打，單局打下4分大局，反倒以4：1領先國民。

國民在5、6兩局，面對道奇第3任投手Julio Urias，都有攻佔上壘包，但最後都在壘間出局，Bryce Harper一時大意遭到牽制出局，Jayson Werth在Ryan Zimmerman敲出二壘安打的情況下硬闖本壘，卻慘遭阻殺在本壘，這兩個失誤造成雙方士氣的轉換。

下一個半局，Pederson一上來就把Max Scherzer的球轟出全壘打大牆，幫助球隊追平比數，這時國民教練團決定更換投手，但是上來的牛棚投手卻重演前天巨人對小熊的劇場，單局動用6名投手都沒辦法壓制道奇的火力，先被代打的Ruiz敲出超前安打，接著又被Turner掃出2分打點的二壘安打，單局被打下4分大局，道奇在這個半局順利超前比分，以4：1領先。

國民在本場比賽，在主場率先「開紅」，非常有機會一償宿願，闖進國聯冠軍戰。但卻因為自己進攻局屢次犯錯，導致士氣轉換，現在反而面臨遭到淘汰的窘境，場上形式並不樂觀。
